Can I Stop BP Tablets When My Reading Is Normal?

The belief

“You can stop blood pressure tablets once your reading is normal”

The truth

The reading is normal because the medicine is working. Stopping lets the pressure rise again, usually within days or weeks, and usually without you feeling anything.

Why this belief spreads

Most medicines are taken until you get better and then stopped — that is how antibiotics and painkillers work, so it is a reasonable assumption. High blood pressure also has no symptoms, so there is nothing to feel when it comes back.

Why it matters

Blood pressure rises silently and the damage to the heart, brain, kidneys and eyes resumes. People discover it years later as a stroke, a heart attack or kidney failure. Because there are no symptoms either way, nothing warns you that stopping was a mistake.

What to do instead

  • Keep taking the medicine, and take your home readings to every appointment
  • If you want to reduce your tablets, discuss it with your doctor — it is sometimes possible after substantial weight loss and salt reduction
  • Any reduction should be gradual and monitored, never a self-made decision
  • Work on salt, weight, activity, alcohol and tobacco alongside the medicine
