Can Diabetics Eat Rice?

The belief

“If you have diabetes you can never eat rice”

The truth

Portion size and what you eat alongside it matter far more than removing rice completely. Most people with diabetes can include rice in a balanced meal.

Why this belief spreads

Rice does raise blood sugar faster than many foods, so the simplest advice became 'stop eating it'. Simple rules are easy to give in a short consultation and easy to repeat, even when they are stricter than necessary.

Why it matters

Advice people cannot follow tends to get abandoned entirely. Someone told to give up rice often gives up on the diet altogether. Rigid food rules also cause real distress in households where rice is the staple, and can push people towards expensive 'diabetic' products that offer little benefit.

What to do instead

  • Reduce the portion rather than removing it
  • Fill more of the plate with vegetables and dal, which slows the sugar rise
  • Try hand-pounded or brown rice, or millets like ragi and bajra, some of the time
  • Take a ten-minute walk after meals — it noticeably blunts the rise in blood sugar
  • Ask for a dietitian referral so the plan fits the food your family actually cooks
