What OD, BD, TDS and HS Mean on a Prescription

OD means once a day, BD twice a day, TDS or TID three times a day, QID four times. PC means after food, AC before food, HS at bedtime, and SOS only when you need it.

সংক্ষেপে

  • OD = once a day. BD = twice. TDS or TID = three times. QID or QDS = four times
  • HS = at night, before sleeping
  • PC = after food. AC = before food
  • SOS = only if needed. STAT = take it now, immediately
  • If you cannot read the handwriting, any pharmacist will read it for you free of charge — guessing is the one thing not to do

These codes are short forms of Latin words, which is why they look like nothing in any language you speak. Doctors use them because they are quick to write and mean exactly one thing.

The frequency codes are the ones people search for most. OD is once in twenty-four hours. BD, sometimes written BID, is twice. TDS and TID both mean three times a day — they are two abbreviations of the same Latin instruction, and there is no difference between them. QID or QDS is four times a day.

Then there are timing codes. HS means at bedtime. PC means after food, AC means before food. Put together, 1 tab OD PC reads as: one tablet, once a day, after food. Cap TDS AC reads as: one capsule, three times a day, before food.

Two more are worth knowing. SOS means take it only if you need it — common on painkillers and fever medicines, and it does not mean take it routinely. STAT means take it immediately, usually the first dose in the clinic itself.

Many Indian prescriptions also use a number pattern instead of letters. 1-0-1 means one in the morning, none in the afternoon, one at night. 1-1-1 is three times a day. 0-0-1 is one at night only. The three slots are always morning, afternoon and night, in that order.

A length is usually written after the frequency. BD x 5 days means twice a day for five days — ten doses in total. For antibiotics that number is not a suggestion; the whole course matters.

One genuine confusion: OD does not mean morning. It means once in a day. Pick a time that you will remember and keep to roughly the same hour each day, because that is what keeps the level in your blood steady.

Finally, the point that matters more than all the definitions. If the handwriting is unclear, do not work it out by guessing, and do not compare it against an old strip lying at home. Take the prescription to any pharmacy and ask. Reading prescriptions is their job, it takes seconds, and they will not charge you for it.

সাধারণ প্রশ্ন

What does 1 tab OD mean?

One tablet, once a day. It does not specify morning or night — choose a time you will remember and keep to it. If it says 1 tab OD PC, take that one tablet once a day after food.

What is the difference between TDS and TID?

There is none. Both mean three times a day. They are abbreviations of two Latin phrasings of the same instruction, and Indian prescriptions use them interchangeably.

Does OD mean I should take it in the morning?

No. OD only tells you how often — once in twenty-four hours. If the timing matters, the prescription will add something: HS for bedtime, AC for before food, PC for after food. If nothing is added, pick a convenient time and stay consistent.

What does 1-0-1 mean on a prescription?

One in the morning, nothing in the afternoon, one at night. The three positions are always morning, afternoon and night. So 1-1-1 is three times a day, and 0-0-1 is at night only.

What does BD for 5 days mean?

Twice a day for five days, which is ten doses in total. Space the two doses roughly twelve hours apart. For antibiotics, finish all ten even if you feel well after four.

What does PC mean in a prescription?

After food. AC means before food. These are not only comfort instructions — some medicines irritate an empty stomach, and others are absorbed poorly when food is present, so the timing changes how well the medicine works.

What does SOS mean on a prescription?

Only if needed. It is usually written on painkillers and fever medicines, and it means you take a dose when the symptom is there rather than on a fixed schedule. The prescription will normally also state the maximum you may take in a day.
